When it comes to the game of cricket, even the big wig producers in Hollywood don't mind featuring a friendly game of backyard cricket in some big budget films. Yep, thats right! Some of the most important scenes from various big names films feature the game or cricket and the Australian film industry is also a fan of the occasional cricket scene, and why wouldn't they be? It's a great Aussie pastime after all.
So here's our list of the big budget movies featuring cricket scenes to watch out for on your next night in.
Australian hit comedy The Dish, was largely based on a story of a group of crazy scientists in remote rural Australia (Parkes to be exact), who were responsible for televising to the world the first images of man's first steps on the moon. The movie received international acclaim and was widely remembered for the scene which showed the actors playing cricket in the satellite dish. Unfortunately these days you might get a slap on the wrist if you attempt to do the same thing, because according to management, you were never actually allowed to step foot on the Dish back then, or now. So why did the producers of the film include the scene involving cricket? Apparently it was iconically Australian so they decided to include it anyway!

It was the hit movie of 2000 that saw tourists in their thousands flock to a small beach (Phi Phi Ley) off the mainland of Thailand. The Beach, which stars Leonardo Dicaprio, features a group of backpackers who make their way to a remote island to live in paradise. Cricket fans would also remember a bunch of scenes in the film showing the small island community playing cricket to pass the time. Sounds like a pretty good island hobby to us. BTW beach cricket is still a pretty thing that happens on the island, you might just have to try your luck playing against some sunburnt English backpackers.
Another Hollywood blockbuster that defied all odds at the Box Office, Slumdog Millionaire tells the tale of a young boy from the slums in India who guesses his way to fame and fortune on the show Who Wants To Be A Millionaire. For one of the final questions the host asks him ‘which cricketer has scored the most first class centuries in history.” The answer…. watch the movie to see!
A brother and sister go on an adventure to K2 in the Himalayas and stumble across a local village playing a game of village cricket. It's actually a pretty important moment for the film and quiet possibly one of the most amazing locations ever used for backyard cricket. It’s definitely on our bucket list for places to hold a game. BYO altitude fitness.
